Today marks the 8 month Anniversary of my move to NY. Every month on the 18th, I pinch myself because I can’t believe I actually live here now and also because I can’t believe I made it through another month. It has been so great having had this opportunity to live in such a great city and to have met so many wonderful people along the way. I feel like my world got infinitely larger by moving across the country. Before NY, my life already felt full. I belong to a loving and extremely supportive family, I have so many beautiful friends and a life that was full of activities brought on because of all the people that make up my life back home. But now that I left all that, physically, behind, my life has become even more full and 8 months ago, although I was hoping to have such a positive change, I never believed it could really happen…and in such a short amount of time.
I have had the good fortune of meeting and creating a great network of people that were just strangers only a few months ago. Many of these people will be in my life long after my time here in NY. It is in these connections that has made my time here so much more enjoyable. Sure I’ve enjoyed exploring the city, checking out museums, dining at great restaurants, Central Park, Battery Park, the High Line, upstate New York, Brooklyn, the list goes on and on. I’ve done a lot since moving here. But none of it would even really be that spectacular if I didn’t have these new dear friends to share some of my ventures with.
It was literally around this time last year that the seed was planted in my head to consider even moving to New York. I was getting bored of SF and craved new surroundings. For months the only place I could think of moving to was LA. I had lived there before and have a few friends there, but it just didn’t seem like enough of a change for me. I had been to NY many times and every time I visit this great city I just love it. Plus when I was in my early 20’s, prior to getting married, I considered moving here to go to Parson’s, but didn’t feel I could handle being that far away from home and being in a new relationship with the man I would end up marrying made that idea disappear pretty quickly…but luckily, somewhere in the back of my mind it never left.
So here I am…finally living out one of my dreams to live in one of the greatest cities on earth. At times when I miss home…my family, friends and Lulu, I try to remind myself to stay present and just enjoy this time because I will likely never have it again. To be single again and accountable only to myself in a city where opportunities are endless is a luxury. I know there are many people who would love to be in my shoes, so I feel blessed and fortunate to have this opportunity. Plus, I already know what life is like in CA (Northern and Southern) and know that at some point I’ll be returning to CA, but for now, I live in NY…and honestly, I have never felt more alive. So thank you NY for being so good to me. I mean, my god….I thought I got my wallet stolen a few months ago only to have it returned a week later with everything, including $130/cash was all accounted for. I even reported it to the NY Police Station and funny enough, just 5 days ago, a sergeant from the station called me to follow-up on my case. What a great city this is indeed!
