2008 Stuyvesant H.S. Winter Concert

Last night I attended the 2008 Winter Concert and Art at Stuyvesant High School. My cousin's son Alex is a freshman there and is a member of the choir. In terms of best high schools, Stuyvesant is ranked #7 in the country. My cousin told me that 30,000 kids line up each year to take the test just to get into this school. They only accept 800 kids each year and I believe they said that only 60 kids from Brooklyn were accepted, Alex being one of them. I am starting to understand why so many ivy league schools are in the east coast. Starting at the age of 12, my cousins' kids are already having to decide what college they want to go to and what they plan on majoring in when they get there. Because they are not getting a private school education, they have to work extra hard to test into specific public schools that have the best pre-collegiate programs. Had Alex not passed the test to get into Stuyvesant, he had already passed the test to get into a public high school with a reputable medical program. But even that high school trumps Stuyvesant. Students who graduate from there have a higher chance of getting into the elite ivy league schools. Alex plans on studying medicine at Stanford and if he studies like he has been since I've been here...chances are he'll be a Cardinal 3.5 years from now.

BTW...The Beasties Boys went to Stuyvesant and in fact were classmates with my cousin Lisa. She's a brain too and is now an attorney working as the Assistant D.A. in the environmental protection bureau for the state of NY.

Oh...and they're all very musically inclined too. My cousin told me not to expect too much from a bunch of high school kids, but boy was he wrong. Go Stuyvesant!
