As I walked around Wall Street today, I accidentally stumbled upon the statue of George Washington (On the corner of Broad and Wall Street). I didn't pay much attention to it until I read the etching underneath his statue which read, "On this site in Federal Hall April 30, 1789 George Washington took the oath as the First President of the United States of America." As soon as I read that, I had chills. How remarkable is it that just yesterday, January 20th, 2009, Barack Obama took his oath as the First Black President of the United States. I'm sure that in 1789, no one would even dare think that such a thing could ever happen, so how lucky are we to be alive to witness something so great. I am still in awe of yesterday and like many others who never cared to watch an inauguration, watched the entire ceremony for the first time. I couldn't even bring myself to leave the house until the parade was over and Barack and Michelle made it safely back into their new home. But I must say, not only was I proud of our newest President, but I was deeply proud of the two women from California, Dianne Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi, who lead our new President to the podium. It is a very exciting time right now for all of us. Some day a statue of President Barack Obama will be erected just like the one of George Washington, and perhaps years from now we can even look forward to Presidents of various color and gender (Go Hillary!). Truly anything is possible if you believe it can happen. Here's to our 44th President and to a new time and era!
